Cape Cod Canal Bikeway: Paved Path

Overview

This bikeway follows the Cape Cod Canal through sections of Bourne and Sagamore, respectively. Maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, it offers fantastic views of the canal’s various boat traffic, along with the area’s quaint shoreline scenery of unique homes and natural beauty.

Note: there are actually two paved paths which comprise this network – they both run parallel to one another on either side of the Canal. For CCBG’s coverage, we’re focusing on the Cape Cod side, not the Bourne side.

Area Details

Following the canal’s south side for 7.5 miles between the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges, this is actually the Army Corp of Engineers’ access road, designated for foot traffic and non-motorized vehicles only. Featuring a generous width with minimal grades, it’s ideal for casual cyclists.

Even during the off-season, you’ll find a steady flow of bicycles, inline skaters and runners utilizing the smooth concrete path with a bright yellow line painted down the center for two-way traffic.

A self-guided educational tour of landmarks is also available for use. Watch for numbers posted on navigational lighting poles running the Bikeway’s entire length spaced out every 500 feet. A Cape Cod Canal bike-hike guide provides descriptive context for these markers.

Additionally, park benches are scattered along the Bikeway for rest and relaxation during a long walk or hard workout. The Bourne Recreation Area also features picnic facilities and an information booth (open in-season) on a nicely landscaped plot to the right of its parking lot.
